Some Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need a visa for Guatemala?

No, a visa is not required but of course, a valid passport is needed. Please check to make sure that your passport is not expired.

2. How do I go from the airport to the retreat?

Most people will choose to fly in to the Guatemala City airport known as La Aurora International. It is most convenient to fly in a day before the retreat begins. It is advisable to stay in Antigua which is just outside Guatemala City the first night. A list of hotels will be made available to those who register for the retreat. You can choose whichever suits your budget and lifestyle and book on
the internet at your own convenience. A pre-arranged shuttle will take you on March 17th to Panajchel and a water taxi will take you to Villa Sumaya.

3. What kind of clothes do I need?

In January, the early mornings and evenings can be cool. Warm sweaters, fleece jackets, shawls and some warmer yoga clothes are recommended. In the late mornings and afternoons the temperatures range from 15 to 23 Celsius or 60 to 75 Fahrenheit. We are in the Mayan highlands which tend to be cooler.

4. Do I need to bring my yoga mat?

Some participants prefer to bring their own mat, small pillow and blanket. Feel free to bring them if you wish. There are mats, blocks and large pillows available in the Yoga Temple.

5. How do I exchange currency?

Please bring American cash or traveller’s cheques. Some banks will accept VISA and others will only accept Mastercard. Debit cards will work in some of the banks in Panajchel and Antigua.

6. Is this workshop suitable for beginners?

Yes, we encourage all people to attend. It is open to all, from beginners to experienced practitioners of yoga. Yoga is about so much more than just the asanas or poses. The morning practice of yoga may be a bit more challenging but everyone is encouraged to become aware of where they are today. To accept what is and honor their own body by listening to its’ messages. If you listen to your own inner voice and your body’s sensations and pay attention to them; then there can be no “over-ego” yoga injuries. The afternoon session will be gentler and devoted to more inner exploration.  There will be times for silence included in the retreat.

Just as in yoga balance poses, there is a continuing stream of awareness and small corrections, so as in your day at the retreat. Allow yourself to take this time to find space and stillness within. In reflection, one gains a greater perspective of their life and how they live it.  Villa Sumaya is a beautiful eco-resort on the shores of Lake Atitlan. The lake is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. You will have ample time to hike, swim or just relax in the gardens. There is a plethora of options for health counselling, massage, Watsu (water massage) and other bodywork options if you choose. For more information on Villa Sumaya, please go here.
